Checkout Fields decides which details a shopper types at your checkout, and which of them they must fill in before they can place the order. It is a card of its own on Settings › Checkout, just under the Checkout card. Anyone who can see settings can open the page; changing it needs the right to change settings, which the store's owner and admins have.

What the Card Shows

The card has two parts.

Your Choice lists the three fields you decide on, one row each, with its choices on the right:

FieldChoicesTo Start WithWhat It Is For
EmailOptional, RequiredRequiredThe order emails, the GST invoice, the shopper's account and a digital order's downloads go to it. It cannot be hidden.
Area, StreetHidden, Optional, RequiredOptionalThe second line of the address.
LandmarkHidden, Optional, RequiredOptional"Near the metro station", up to 120 characters. It goes on the order and on the courier's label.

Always Asked shows the fields every checkout asks for, each marked Required with a lock: Mobile Number, Full Name, PIN Code, Flat, House No., Building and City. Couriers need them to deliver, so they cannot be changed.

A note at the bottom says that shoppers abroad always give an email, and that their address form follows their country (see Markets).

Tap a choice and the save bar appears, as for every other setting on the page: SAVE saves it with the rest of the page, DISCARD puts it back.

What Shoppers See

  • Required: the field's label has no "(Optional)", for example Email instead of Email (Optional). If the shopper leaves it empty and presses PLACE ORDER, the page says what is missing right under the field ("Enter your email address.") and moves the cursor there.
  • Optional: the label ends with "(Optional)" and the shopper may leave it empty. An email that is typed must still look like one.
  • Hidden: the field is not on the checkout at all.

Your choice is checked again by Mercayo's server when the order is placed, so an order can never get past a required field, even from a page that was open before you changed it. The same words then show under the field.

A signed-in shopper whose saved address lacks a field you now require sees the address form open with that field to fill in.

Why the Email Is Required to Start With

Most Indian shoppers check out with their mobile number, and couriers call that number. The email is what carries everything after the order: the order confirmation and every update, the GST invoice and credit notes, the "Your account is ready" email that signs them in to their new account (see Shopper Accounts Settings), and a digital product's downloads. An order without an email gets none of these.

If many of your shoppers have no email address (a neighbourhood sweet shop, for example), choose Optional. Orders without an email still get their SMS and WhatsApp messages where you have them set up.

The Landmark and Its Old Switch

Before this card, the landmark had a simple on/off switch called Landmark. A store that had switched it off sees Hidden here, and nothing changes for its shoppers. Choosing Optional or Required shows the field again.

Mercayo's Override

Like every setting, each field's choice can be fixed by Mercayo for one store, with a reason. The locked row then says "Set by Mercayo" with the reason, and the choices that would change it are greyed out. The effective choice is Mercayo's override, then yours, then the default.

What Is Not Here

  • Orders made by your team (Orders › Create Order) are not affected: staff decide what to ask the customer.
  • Your own extra fields (a delivery date, a tick box for your terms, a question) are in the card below it: see Your Own Checkout Fields.
  • The mobile number cannot be made optional: every order needs one, for the courier and the delivery updates.
