Personalisation lets a product ask the shopper for details before it goes in the bag: initials to stamp on a leather wallet, a name to print on a mug, a choice of gold or silver foil, a delivery date for a cake, a photo for a printed cushion. Each detail can add to the price. The details travel with the item through the bag, checkout, the order, the emails, the packing slip and the GST invoice, so your team makes exactly what was asked. Personalisation is included in every Mercayo plan.
You set it up in the Personalisation card of a saved product in the Product Editor, or in a collection's editor to ask every product in the collection at once. Changing it needs the right to edit products (the owner, admins and the Catalog Editor).
"Ask shoppers for details: a name to engrave, a choice, a date or a photo. Each can add to the price."
The Six Kinds of Field
ADD A FIELD opens a menu with six kinds. Each new field starts with a sensible label you can change.
| Kind | What the Shopper Gives | Starts As | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text | One line of text | Name, required, up to 20 characters | Initials for a monogram |
| Longer Text | A few lines | Message, optional, up to 200 characters | A card message |
| Choice | One of your choices, each with its own price | Finish, with Option 1 and Option 2 | Gold foil (+₹149), Silver foil (+₹99) |
| Tick Box | Yes, by ticking | Gift Box, optional | Gift box (+₹99) |
| Date | A day in a window from today | Date, from 2 to 90 days ahead | Delivery date for a cake |
| Photo Upload | A photo, cropped to your shape | Your Photo, required, at least 800 pixels | A photo for a printed cushion |
A product or collection can ask for up to 10 fields (Settings › Product Page › Personalisation › Fields per Product, 1 to 20).
A seventh kind, Dependent dropdown, asks in two or three linked steps (Brand → Model, Metal → Purity → Size) from your own list or your Fit list, with a price, a code or hidden for each entry. See Dependent Dropdowns, Step by Step.
Every Field's Settings
Click EDIT on a field to open its settings; DONE closes them. The up and down arrows change the order shoppers see; the × removes it.
| Setting | What It Does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Label | "What shoppers see, such as Initials or Name on the Mug." Up to 80 characters. Required. | The kind's starting label |
| Help Text | "Optional, under the field: “Up to 3 letters, in gold foil.”" | Empty |
| Required | "Shoppers must fill it in before adding the item." | On for Text and Photo Upload, off for the others |
| Adds to the Price | "For each item, when it is used. GST is charged with the item; offers never discount it." Like 149 or 149.50. | Nothing |
| Show Only When | "A field can wait for a choice or a tick box above it, like a card message for a gift box." Pick the field and, for a choice, which value (Is). | Always shown |

Choice
Each choice has a name (up to 80 characters) and What … adds (₹0 to ₹10,000). ADD A CHOICE adds one, up to 50. PASTE A LIST takes One Choice per Line with an optional price after a comma ("Gold foil, 149") and, on USE THIS LIST, replaces the choices above. Two choices cannot have the same name.

How to Set Up Personalisation on a Product
Example: a leather goods brand in Kanpur offering initials on a wallet.
- Open the wallet in the product editor (save it first if it is new).
- In Personalisation, press ADD A FIELD and choose Text.
- Click EDIT. Set Label to Initials, Help Text to "Up to 3 letters, stamped in gold", Allowed Characters to Letters only, Most Characters to 3, and tick In capitals.
- Type 149 in Adds to the Price.
- Tick Show on the product's photo, and move Across and Down until the preview sits where the stamp goes.
- Press ADD A FIELD again, choose Tick Box, label it Gift Box, price 99.
- Add a Longer Text labelled Card Message, and set Show Only When to Gift Box.
- Press SAVE in the card. "Saved. The store's pages show the new fields within a minute."
The Personalisation card has its own SAVE (and DISCARD); the product's save bar does not save it.
Personalisation for a Whole Collection
Open a collection, scroll to Personalisation and add fields there: "These fields apply to every product in this collection that has none of its own." A mug shop can ask "Name on the Mug" once, for every mug.
- A product with no fields of its own shows: "This product uses 2 fields from Mugs. Add fields here to give it its own instead."
- A product with its own fields uses only those: "This product's own fields are used instead of those of Mugs."
What Shoppers See
- A Personalise section on the product page with your fields, marked Required or Optional, with any price shown as "+₹149" and the total added ("Adds ₹248").
- Hints from your rules: "Letters only.", "Shown in capitals.", "Any day from 21 Oct to 17 Jan.", and a counter like 2/3.
- With Show on the product's photo, a Preview of what they type on the photo: "A guide to placement; the finished piece is made by hand."
- For a photo: Upload a Photo ("JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB, at least 800 pixels on the shorter side."), then Crop Your Photo with a zoom slider and Use This Photo. Too small a photo is refused: "This photo is too small to print sharply."
- ADD TO BAG checks every field and says what is missing ("Initials: please fill this in."). The bag line shows each detail ("Initials: RKS"), and the same item with different details is a separate line.
- A personalised item with a required field cannot be added from a product card or BUY AGAIN; the shopper is sent to its page: "This item is made with your details. Add them on its page."
On the Order
The details are frozen on the order line exactly as given, and show on:
- the Order Page in the admin, with the shopper's photo, its crop ("Use the part 1200 × 1200 px from 140, 80") and Download Original for staff who can see orders;
- the packing slips your team packs from;
- the order confirmation email and your new-order alert;
- the shopper's order page;
- the GST invoice, under the item's name.
Shoppers' photos are kept private: only the bag that uploaded them and your team can see them. Photos that never became part of an order are removed after 30 days.
Prices, Offers and GST
- The price a field adds is per item and part of the item's price, so it is charged GST at the item's rate.
- Offers are worked out on the item's own price, never on what personalisation adds: "₹499 for any case" does not make the engraving free, and 10% off does not take 10% of it.
- If you change a field after a shopper has added the item (remove a choice, make a field required), the bag says "The options for this item have changed. Please remove it and add it again." and checkout waits until they do.
Settings and Mercayo Controls
In Settings › Product Page:
| Setting | What It Does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Personalisation | "Products and collections may ask shoppers for details… Off: no product asks." | On |
| Fields per Product | The most fields one product or collection may ask for (1 to 20) | 10 |
| Photo Uploads | "Shoppers may upload a photo where a product asks for one. Off: photo fields are not shown." | On |
| Largest Photo | In MB, for each photo a shopper uploads (1 to 20) | 10 |
Mercayo can force or limit each of these for your store. When personalisation is off, the card says "Personalisation is off for this store, so shoppers do not see these fields." with Open Settings; when photo uploads are off, photo fields carry a warning.
Good to Know
- Fields keep their identity when you edit them, so items already in shoppers' bags keep their details.
- Up to 30 photos per bag.
- Duplicating a product does not copy its personalisation fields.
- An exchange of a personalised item does not carry the details across; agree them with the shopper.
- Personalisation is universal: label fields for what you sell (Name on the Cake, Size of the Frame, Your Pet's Photo).
Questions
Can a choice change the price by different amounts?
Yes. Each choice has its own What … adds, from ₹0 to ₹10,000.
Can I offer personalisation on only some variants?
Fields belong to the whole product. If only one colour can be engraved, explain it in Help Text, or make that colour a separate product.
Do discounts apply to the personalisation price?
No. Offers apply to the item's own price only; the personalisation add-on is always charged in full.
Where does my team see the shopper's photo?
On the order page, with Download Original to get the photo exactly as uploaded, and the crop to use.
Why don't shoppers see my fields?
Check that Personalisation is on in Settings › Product Page, that the product is active, and that you pressed SAVE inside the Personalisation card. Store pages show changes within a minute.
Can I ask for a photo without cropping?
Set Crop Shape to Any shape. Shoppers still place the photo, but any shape is accepted.
