Buy X get Y offers give items free, at a percentage off or at a set price when a shopper buys others: "Buy 2 kurtis, get the 3rd free", "Buy 1 get 1 free", "Buy a phone case, get a grip at 50% off", "Spend ₹999 on cases, get a screen guard free". In Mercayo it is one kind of discount, Buy X get Y, made in the Discount Editor, as a code or an automatic offer. The bag works out which items are given, tells shoppers what to add, and never adds anything for them.
Making these offers needs the right to edit discounts (the owner, admins and the Marketer role). Buy X get Y must be on in Discount Settings (it is on by default); when it is off, the choice disappears for new offers, and a saved one shows "Buy X get Y is switched off for this store, so this offer does not apply."

Every Choice in the Editor
Customer Buys
| Choice | Field | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| A number of items (the default) | Items to Buy (default 2) | 1 to 99 |
| A spend on them | Spend at Least (₹) | Above ₹0. A spend always gives items from another set. |
What they buy is the offer's targets under What They Buy: products, collections, categories, and (when Exclusions and More Targets is on) brands, variants, options and tags. With nothing chosen, any product counts. The offer's Exclusions apply to what they buy and to what they get.
Customer Gets
- More of the same items: "Buy 2, get 1 free: the items given come from what they buy."
- Items from another set: "Buy a case, get a grip: choose what they get below." Choose them under What They Get.
- Items They Get (default 1): from 1 to 99.
- At: Free (the default), A percentage off (Percentage Off, 0.01% to 100%), or A price each (Price Each, ₹0.01 to ₹1,00,000). A price above the item's own price saves nothing on that item.
Items Given
Which items in the bag become the free or reduced ones:
| Choice | What It Means |
|---|---|
| The lowest-priced ones (the default) | "The usual way: the shopper pays for the dearest items." |
| The highest-priced ones | The dearest items are given; generous, for a launch |
| In the order of the bag | The bag's line order decides: items bought first, then the items given |
Count Items
For More of the same items, Count Items decides which items count together:
- Across the chosen items (mix and match) (the default): a red kurti and a blue kurti count as two.
- Per product: each product counts on its own.
- Per option (exactly the same item): only the same variant counts, "buy 1 get 1 of the same size free".
Times per Order
- As often as the bag allows (the default): 6 kurtis give 2 free.
- Once: one application per order.
- Up to a number of times: At Most from 1 to 99.
A Cap on the Saving
Up to (₹) caps the saving of the whole offer on one order, for any shape, for example "Buy 2 get 1 free, up to ₹500 off".
The Other Cards
Buy X get Y uses the editor's usual Exclusions, Limits, Combinations, Who Can Use It, On Product Pages and Active Dates. It has no Minimum Purchase of its own: what they buy is its minimum. It is a product offer under Combinations: it combines with order offers and free delivery when both sides tick each other, and another product offer on the same items competes with it.
How the Bag Applies It
- The bag forms as many applications as the bag and Times per Order allow. With The lowest-priced ones, the cheapest items are given and the dearest are the ones bought.
- An item is used once: a free item is never also counted as a bought one.
- The saving of a given item is its price (free), its price × the percentage, or its price less the set price, never below ₹0. The total is rounded once to the paisa, then capped by Up to (₹).
- Every item that takes part in the offer, bought or given, is taken for this offer: another product offer cannot also apply to it. Order and delivery offers can still combine.
GST on the Invoice
How the saving shows on the GST invoice is set by Buy X Get Y on the Invoice in Discount Settings, and the editor repeats it:
- All (the default): "On the invoice the saving is shared by all the items of the offer, so each keeps its GST (CBIC circular 92/11/2019)." Buy 2 get 1 free on three ₹1,000 kurtis: each line shows about ₹333 off, and each keeps a taxable value.
- Get: "On the invoice the whole saving sits on the items given." The free kurti shows ₹1,000 off.
The bag, the order and the invoice agree to the paisa either way. This is general guidance, not tax advice; ask your CA which way suits your business.
What Shoppers See
On the Product Page
With Show this offer on product pages ticked on an automatic offer with no shopper condition, the product page lists it in words under the price, without changing any price:
- on a product it buys: "Buy 2, get 1 free", "Buy 1, get 1 from Grips at 50% off", "Spend ₹999, get 1 from Grips free";
- on a product it gives: "Get this at 50% off when you buy 1 from Phone Cases";
- with its terms: "The lowest-priced items are the ones you get", "Once per order" or "Up to 2 times per order", "Repeats as often as your bag allows", "Up to ₹500 off", "Applies in your bag", "Until 31 Oct", and a Shop … link to the other set.
Your Line Shown with the Code replaces the generated words when you type one. Offer labels on product cards read "Buy 2 get 1 free", "Buy 1, get 1 at 50% off" and so on (see Automatic Offers).
In the Bag
- Under a line the offer gives: "1 free", "1 at 50% off" or "1 at ₹99".
- When a little more would unlock it: "Add 1 more and it's free." with ADD (one tap adds one more of the cheapest item), "Add 2 more to get 1 free.", "Spend ₹300 more to get 1 free.", or "Your bag gets 1 from Grips at 50% off. Add it to your bag." with ADD when one item of the set can be added directly, else Shop Grips.
- The drawer shows the nearest hint; the bag page shows up to two.
The free or reduced item must be in the bag. Mercayo never adds it by itself, so shoppers never find an item they did not choose.
Good to Know
- Problems are checked before saving: "Give how many items they buy (1 to 99), or the spend.", "Give how many items they get (1 to 99).", "Choose what they get.", "Give how many times per order (1 to 99).", "Give the percentage (0.01 to 100) or the price each (₹0.01 to ₹1,00,000)."
- In the Discounts list the offer reads "Buy 2, get 1" or "Spend ₹999, get 1".
- DUPLICATE copies the shape and the get set.
- For "spend ₹1,499, choose one gift from a list at ₹0", use a Free Gift Offer instead: the shopper picks the gift in the bag.
Questions
What is the difference between buy X get Y and a free gift?
Buy X get Y reduces items the shopper puts in the bag, with every rule above. A free gift adds a ₹0 gift the shopper chooses from your list in the bag, changing no other price.
Can I make "buy 3, pay for 2"?
Yes: Items to Buy 2, Items They Get 1, More of the same items, Free. A bag of 3 pays for the 2 dearest.
Can the free item be a different product?
Yes. Choose Items from another set and pick the products under What They Get.
Why didn't the bag give the free item?
The item to be given must be in the bag. Check the bag's hint ("Add 1 more and it's free."), the offer's dates and status, and use Try a Bag in the editor to see the reason.
Does buy X get Y combine with a code for 10% off?
Yes, when both offers tick each other's kind under Combinations: the buy X get Y is a product offer, a 10% code is an order offer.
