This guide walks you through one complete product, the way you will add most of them. Every field is explained in depth in The Product Editor; here we go in the order that works best for a first product. If you already sell on Shopify, WooCommerce or Dukaan, you can bring your whole catalogue across instead: see Import and Export.
As an example we will add a phone case, "Aura Bloom Case", sold in three phone models at ₹599 with an MRP of ₹999.
Step 1: Open a New Product
Open Products and press ADD PRODUCT (or ADD A PRODUCT in the setup guide on Home, or type add product in search with Ctrl K). A new product starts as a Draft: shoppers cannot see it until you make it Active.
You need a role that can change products (the owner, admins, and the Catalog Editor preset role can).
Step 2: Title, Tagline and Description
- Title: what shoppers see everywhere, for example "Aura Bloom Case". Keep it clear and specific; it also becomes the product's web address (Handle, for example
/products/aura-bloom-case). - Tagline: one short line under the title, for example "Soft-touch, drop-tested, made in Jaipur".
- Description: the full story, with headings, lists and bold text from the editor's toolbar. Write what a shopper needs to decide: material, size, what is in the box, care.
Step 3: Options and Variants
A product with no options is sold as one item ("No options: the product is sold as one item."). Our case comes in three phone models, so:
- Under Options, choose Add option.
- Option 1 Name:
Phone model. Add the valuesiPhone 15,Galaxy S24,Pixel 8, pressing Enter after each. - The Variants table now has one row per value. Fill in each row's Price (₹) (599), Compare-at (₹) (999, your MRP), SKU (your own code, for example
AURA-IP15) and Stock (how many you have).
You can add a second option (such as Colour); every combination becomes a variant. For a store that sells by phone model, Add from phone list fills the values from your Fit List. Details: Product Variants and Options.
Step 4: Shipping and Stock
In Shipping and Stock:
- Weight (g): the packed weight in grams. It prices delivery and goes on the courier label.
- Track Stock: on, so Mercayo counts stock down with each order and stops selling at zero.
- Keep Selling When Out of Stock: leave off unless you make to order.
- Cost (₹): what the item costs you; for your reports only, shoppers never see it.
Step 5: GST
In GST, type the HSN Code (4 to 8 digits) or pick it from the finder. It sets the GST rate. If your store is GST-registered, a product without an HSN code cannot be sold. When your store has no rate for that code yet, the card offers to add the rate for you ("ADD 18% TO MY STORE"). See Taxes.
Step 6: Organisation
In Organisation: pick Categories, add Tags (separated by commas, such as summer, gift), a Product Type (your own grouping, like Case or Charger), a Brand, and tick Featured Product to mark it as featured. Collections and categories decide where the product appears in your store's menus and lists: see Collections and Categories.
Step 7: Save, Then Add Photos
Press SAVE in the save bar at the top. Photos are added to a saved product ("Save the product first, then add its photos here."), so:
- In Photos, add your pictures: drag them in or pick them from your computer or phone.
- Drag them into order: the first is the one on product cards.
- Give each a short description (it helps shoppers using screen readers and search engines).
- Link a photo to the option value it shows, so choosing "Galaxy S24" shows that case.
Use large, sharp photos; Mercayo never lowers their quality. See Product Photos and Videos.
Step 8: Search Engine Listing
Search Engine Listing shows how the product may look in Google. Leave it empty to use the title and description, or write a Page Title and Meta Description of your own.
Step 9: Make It Active
Set Status to Active and press SAVE. "Only active products are on the store." Open your store to see it: the product page, its place in its collections and categories, and search.
After Your First Product
- Add more, or duplicate this one from the Products list to save typing.
- Set up quantity prices, add-ons and bought-together products and personalisation when you need them.
- The setup guide's Add Your First Product step is ticked once you have an active product of your own.
Questions
Why can't I add photos?
Save the product first. The photo card works on a saved product.
Why does my product not show on the store?
Check that Status is Active. A product with no stock still shows, marked sold out. If your store is GST-registered, also give it an HSN code with a rate, or it cannot be ordered.
How many variants can a product have?
The editor stops you at its limit and says "That would make more than … variants." Split very large ranges into several products.
