Set Up Payments

Take cash on delivery from day one, then connect your own Razorpay account for UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets, test it, and go live.

Your store can take two kinds of payment: cash on delivery (COD), which is on for every new store, and online payments through your own Razorpay account (UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets). The money from online payments goes straight from Razorpay to your bank account; Mercayo never holds it. This guide takes you from a new store to both, end to end. For every field, see Payments and Checkout and COD Settings.

Step 1: Decide How You Take Cash on Delivery

Cash on delivery is switched on when your store is created, with no extra fee and no limit. Review it in Settings › Checkout and COD:

SettingWhat It DoesDefault
Cash on DeliveryLets shoppers pay in cash when the order arrivesOn
Cash on Delivery FeeAn extra charge on orders paid in cash. ₹0 means no fee₹0
Cash on Delivery LimitThe most cash a courier may collect for one order, fee included. Larger orders must be paid online. Empty means no limitNo limit

To cut fake COD orders, two tools help, both off by default:

  • Confirm COD Orders by Code: the shopper confirms their mobile number with a one-time code before a COD order is placed. It needs an SMS provider. See COD With Confirmation Codes.
  • Part Payment for COD: the shopper pays a small part online first (a COD charge on small bags, an advance on larger ones). Needs Razorpay. See Partial COD.

Step 2: Get Your Razorpay Keys

You need a Razorpay account in your business's name (sign up at razorpay.com and complete their checks). Then:

  1. In your Razorpay Dashboard, open Account & Settings → API Keys and generate a key.
  2. Start with test keys (the key id begins with rzp_test_). Test payments are pretend: no real money moves.
  3. Keep the dashboard open: you will copy the Key ID and the Key Secret.

Step 3: Connect Razorpay in Mercayo

  1. In the admin, open Settings › Payments. Only people whose role can manage payments see this screen (the owner and admins).
  2. Paste the Key ID and the Key Secret. The screen tells you which kind of key it is: "Test key: payments are pretend, no real money moves." or "Live key: shoppers will pay real money."
  3. Press CONNECT RAZORPAY.

If the keys are refused, the screen says why ("Razorpay keys refused: …"). Typical mistakes: a key id that does not start with rzp_test_ or rzp_live_, or a secret copied only in part ("This does not look like a whole key secret; copy it again from Razorpay").

Step 4: Add the Webhook in Razorpay

Once connected, the screen shows Finish in Razorpay: one step is left, telling Razorpay where to send payment notices. This is what confirms an order the moment a shopper pays.

  1. In your Razorpay Dashboard, open Settings → Webhooks → Add New Webhook.
  2. Copy the Webhook URL from Mercayo (COPY) into Razorpay.
  3. Copy the Secret from Mercayo into Razorpay's secret field.
  4. Under Active Events, tick payment.captured and order.paid, then save in Razorpay.
  5. Back in Mercayo, press DONE, I HAVE ADDED IT.

Step 5: Enable Online Payments at Checkout

Connecting Razorpay does not show it to shoppers by itself. In Settings › Checkout and COD, turn on Online Payments ("Shoppers can pay by UPI, card, netbanking or wallet through your own Razorpay account"). It is off by default, so you can connect and test first.

Also look at Time to Pay (default 30 minutes, 10 to 1,440): how long a shopper has to finish an online payment before the order is cancelled and its stock goes back.

Step 6: Test, Then Go Live

  1. With test keys connected and online payments on, place an order on your own store and pay with Razorpay's test card or UPI.
  2. Check the order in Orders: it should show as paid once the webhook confirms it.
  3. When you are happy, generate live keys in Razorpay (the key id begins with rzp_live_), open Settings › Payments, press REPLACE KEYS, paste the live keys and press CONNECT LIVE ACCOUNT.
  4. Repeat Step 4 for the live webhook: connecting again makes a new webhook secret.

What Shoppers See

At checkout, shoppers choose between the ways of paying you allow: Cash on Delivery (with its fee, if any) and paying online. An online payment opens Razorpay's window over your checkout; when it succeeds, the shopper lands on your thank-you page. A bag over your COD limit offers online payment only.

Disconnecting

DISCONNECT on the Payments screen asks "Disconnect Razorpay?": shoppers will not be able to pay online until you connect again. Payments already confirmed stay as they are; a shopper paying at that very moment may not be confirmed. Remove Mercayo's webhook in your Razorpay Dashboard too.

Good to Know

  • The key secret and the webhook secret are kept encrypted and are never shown again, to you or to Mercayo's staff.
  • Refunds of online payments go back through your Razorpay account. See Refunds.
  • One of the launch checks is "Choose How You Get Paid": COD on, or Razorpay connected, is enough.

Questions

Do I need Razorpay to launch?

Does Mercayo take a fee on my payments?

Mercayo does not add a fee on your orders. Razorpay charges its own fees on online payments, under your agreement with Razorpay.

Can I use another payment gateway?

Razorpay is the gateway Mercayo connects today.

Razorpay is connected. Why do shoppers not see online payment?

Turn on Online Payments in Settings › Checkout and COD. See Payments Not Working for more causes.
