Filter Builder

Choose how each filter group shows to shoppers (list, buttons, swatches, dropdown, a price slider or your own price ranges), whether several ticks match any or all, and see it in a live preview before you save.

The Filter Builder is part of Settings › Filters. Each filter group opens to its own settings: how its choices look, how several ticks combine, its numbers and how much of it shows at first. A live preview beside the groups shows the result on a phone (the FILTER sheet) and on a computer (the sidebar) before you save.

Anyone who can see settings can open it; changing it needs the right to change settings (settings.edit).

Open a Group's Settings

  1. Open Settings, then Filters.
  2. Under Filter Groups, tap a group's name. Its row opens; tap it again to close it.

The row's second line says how the group shows now, for example "Automatic (Swatches)" or "Buttons | All Chosen".

To change the order of the groups, drag a group by its handle (the dots at the start of its row): with the mouse on a computer, or with your finger on a phone or tablet (the page stays still while you drag; near the top or bottom of the screen the list scrolls). On a keyboard, focus the handle and press the up and down arrow keys.

Show As

How its choices look. The first choice, Automatic, lets Mercayo pick what suits the group, and names what it picks:

  • List: tick boxes, one per row, with the number of products right-aligned.
  • Buttons: small buttons side by side; good for sizes and models.
  • Swatches: colour circles, or the option value's own picture, with the name under each.
  • Dropdown: one choice from a menu ("Any Brand" first). A dropdown keeps one choice in the group.

Price Ranges

Choose Price Ranges under Show As on the Price group, and Mercayo suggests ranges from your products' prices. Each range has From (₹) and To (₹); leave From empty for "Up to", To empty for "From … and above".

  1. Change the numbers, or press ADD RANGE (up to 8) or the bin to remove one (at least 2 stay).
  2. SUGGEST RANGES fills them again from your prices.
  3. A range whose From is not under its To is named: "Each range needs a From or a To, and From under To. Keep 2 to 8 ranges." SAVE stays grey until it is fixed.

Shoppers tick one range at a time, each with its number of products. On a page shown in another market's currency the price shows as a slider.

Swatch Colours

On a group shown as Swatches, Swatch Colours lists its choices with a colour picker each. "A colour for each choice. Empty: the colour set on the product's option." Use it for a group of tags (Glossy, Matte, Leather) or to make two shades of one colour match across products. The × beside a choice goes back to the option's own colour.

Match

For a group where a product can have several choices (category, collection, an option, your groups of tags):

  • Any Chosen (the default): a product with one of the ticked choices shows. Ticking Red and Blue shows red ones and blue ones.
  • All Chosen: only a product with every ticked choice shows. Ticking Cotton and Linen shows only products tagged with both.

"Any: a product with one of the ticked choices shows. All: only a product with every ticked choice." A brand is one per product, so it always matches any.

Counts, Opening, MORE and Find

  • Show Counts: the number of products beside each choice (on).
  • Open at Start: the group is open when the filters open (on). A group with a choice ticked always opens.
  • Choices Before MORE: how many choices show before SHOW N MORE (8; from 3 to 40). A ticked choice never hides behind MORE.
  • Find Box: Automatic (from 12 choices), On or Off.

The Live Preview

"How the filters look with your choices, before you save. The numbers are your products today." The preview uses your store's own colours, fonts and corners (from your theme), including fonts you uploaded yourself, so it looks as it will on your store. Switch between Phone (the FILTER sheet with CLEAR ALL and SHOW N PRODUCTS) and Computer (the sidebar beside the products). It follows every change at once. On a phone the preview is under the groups; on a computer it stays beside them.

Which Choices Show

Like the best stores, a choice shows only when at least one product of the list (with the other filters already ticked) has it, and the numbers count products in stock. A choice the shopper ticked always stays, so it can be removed. Both are switches in Settings › Storefront › Product Lists (the OPEN SETTINGS button on the Which Choices Show card):

SettingDefaultWhat It Does
Hide Filter Choices with No ProductsOn"A choice shows only when a product of the list (with the other filters) has it. Off: such choices stay, greyed."
Count Only Products in StockOn"Counts only what can be bought: a size or colour counts a product only when that variant can be bought, and a size and a colour chosen together match only a variant that is both."

The counts are worked out over every product of the list, not only the first page the shopper sees.

Sizes, colours and your other options are counted by the variant. A shirt sold out in L but in stock in M counts under M and not under L, and a shopper who ticks L does not see it. A variant counts as available when it is in stock, when it keeps selling while out of stock (backorders and pre-orders), or when you do not track its stock. Brands, categories, collections, tags, price and rating still count the whole product. With Count Only Products in Stock off, every product with the choice counts, sold out or not.

When a shopper ticks options of different groups, for example L and Red, they are checked on one variant: a product shows only when it has a variant that is both L and Red and can be bought. A shirt whose L-Red is sold out but whose L-Blue and M-Red are in stock does not show for L and Red. The numbers follow the same rule: with Red ticked, L counts only products with an L-Red that can be bought. Inside one group, Any and All work as you set them: with Size set to All, ticking L, M and Red shows products with both an L-Red and an M-Red that can be bought.

How to Show Colours as Swatches and Sizes as Buttons

  1. In Settings › Filters, add your Colour and Size options as groups (Add a product option…) if they are not there.
  2. Tap Colour and choose Swatches under Show As (Automatic already picks it when your colours have a swatch colour or picture).
  3. Tap Size and choose Buttons.
  4. Check the preview, then press SAVE.

How to Offer Price Ranges Instead of a Slider

  1. Tap Price and choose Price Ranges.
  2. Adjust the suggested ranges, for example Up to ₹499, ₹499 to ₹999, ₹999 to ₹1,999 and ₹1,999 and above.
  3. Press SAVE.

How to Match Products with Every Ticked Tag

  1. Tap your group of tags (for example "Fabric").
  2. Under Match, choose All Chosen.
  3. Press SAVE.

Mercayo Controls

Each group's look is your store's own content: Mercayo does not edit it. Filters on Product Lists, Hide Filter Choices with No Products and Count Only Products in Stock are settings Mercayo can set for your store, with a reason shown beside the locked setting; each change is in Mercayo's audit log. The bar shoppers use on phones is List Bar on Phones in Section Styles.

Good to Know

  • One setup covers every list: all products, collections, categories, the sale page and search.
  • Saving rebuilds your list pages at once; shoppers see the change on their next page.
  • If someone else saved the filters while you were editing, SAVE says so and offers LOAD THE LATEST.

Questions

Why does a colour I sell not show in the filter?

Either no product in that list has it with the other filters ticked, or all its products are sold out (with Count Only Products in Stock on). It shows again once a product with it is back in stock.

A size is sold out on one product but the filter still shows it. Why?

Another product of the list has that size in stock. The number beside the size counts only the products whose variant in that size can be bought, so it goes down by one when a product's size sells out, and the size leaves the filter only when no product has it to sell.

Can a dropdown take several choices?

No. A dropdown keeps one choice in its group; use List or Buttons for several.

Will price ranges work abroad?

On a page in another market's currency the price group shows as a slider in that currency.
