Quick Checkout for Returning Shoppers

Returning Shoppers Check Out in a Few Taps

A shopper who has bought before should not type everything again. With shopper accounts, their name, number and saved addresses are ready at checkout, and BUY NOW takes them there in one tap.

Checkout on a phone, mobile number first

Kosha is a demo store on Mercayo. Its products, orders and customers are sample data.

In short

What It Does

Mercayo's checkout gets faster for every shopper who signs in:

  • Signed in, details filled in. A shopper who signs in (with a 6-digit code on their phone or by email, or with Google) finds "Signed in as" and their name, mobile number and email already at checkout.
  • Saved addresses. Their saved addresses come first as cards, the default one chosen and marked Default. "A new address" opens the form; "Save this address to my account" is ticked for them (up to 10 addresses; a copy of one already saved is never added).
  • Home, Work or Other. Each address carries its name, so choosing the right one is a glance.
  • Landmark. An optional landmark ("near the metro station") goes on the order and the courier's label.
  • BUY NOW. On a product page, BUY NOW puts the product in the bag and opens checkout directly.
  • Mobile code first. If you ask for the COD code, it can be asked right under the mobile number, so a returning shopper confirms the number and moves on.
  • Their offers and balances. Their store credit, and offers meant for signed-in shoppers or for their reward tier, apply at checkout by name.

How Shoppers Sign In

WayWhat the Shopper Does
Phone codeTypes the mobile number and gets a 6-digit code, on WhatsApp first where it is set up, with SEND BY SMS if it does not arrive
Email codeTypes the email and gets a 6-digit code
GoogleOne tap with their Google account, once Mercayo has Google sign-in set up

There is no password. A code lasts 10 minutes and allows 5 tries, and asking for a code answers alike for a known and an unknown number, so the sign-in never tells anyone whether a number has an account.

Guests are never forced to sign in. After a guest order, the thank-you page invites them to sign in with their phone, and every earlier order placed as a guest with that verified phone joins the account at once.

For your store

Why It Matters

Returning shoppers are your best shoppers, and the second order should be easier than the first. Every field a returning shopper does not have to type is one less reason to stop, especially on a phone in a moving auto or between meetings.

Saved addresses with names also cut delivery problems: "Home" and "Work" are chosen deliberately, with the landmark the courier needs, instead of being retyped from memory on a small screen, with a wrong PIN code or a half-remembered building name.

Signing in with a code on the phone fits how Indian shoppers already sign in to apps: no password to forget, no new account to make before buying, and the order history, invoices and BUY AGAIN waiting for them next time.

BUY NOW suits the shopper who knows exactly what they want, such as a gift on the last day or a refill of something they have bought before: one tap from the product to the checkout.

Step by step

How It Works

  1. Keep Shopper Accounts On

In Settings → Shopper Accounts, shopper accounts are on to start with, with sign-in by an email code, a phone code and Google. You choose which ways to offer; if you switch off both email and phone, email stays on so shoppers can still sign in. See customer accounts.

  2. Keep Saved Addresses On

In Settings → Checkout and COD → Checkout, Save addresses is on: signed-in shoppers see their saved addresses and may save a new one. Keep Home, Work or Other and Landmark on too, so every saved address carries its name and its landmark.

  3. Show BUY NOW on Product Pages

In the Theme editor's Product Page section, the Buy now switch adds BUY NOW beside ADD TO BAG: it "goes straight to checkout with this one product". Mercayo's ready-made looks have it on.

  4. Shoppers Sign In When It Suits Them

From the store's account page, or from the thank-you page after a guest order ("Keep Your Orders in One Place"). Orders placed as a guest with the same verified phone join the account at the first sign-in, so their history appears at once.

  5. Their Next Checkout Is Ready

Checkout opens with their details and default address chosen. They tap another saved address if this one is for the office, confirm the delivery option and payment, and place the order. A new address they type is saved for next time.

What Your Shoppers See

Signed in, checkout opens with their details and their default address. They tap another saved address if this one is for the office, choose how fast and how to pay, and place the order. BUY NOW skips the bag entirely. Signing in takes a code, not a password, and their old guest orders are waiting in the account when they do.

Mercayo

Mercayo's Controls

Mercayo's team can fix these settings for a store with a reason your admin shows; every change is in Mercayo's audit log, and the effective value is Mercayo's override, then your setting, then the default. Some limits are Mercayo's alone, such as how long a shopper waits for a WhatsApp code before SEND BY SMS appears (30 seconds to start with). A shopper's saved addresses belong to their account in your store only: another store on Mercayo never sees them, and each store's shoppers are kept apart by the database itself.

Good to Know Before You Start

  • There is no one-tap wallet checkout (such as a stored card) on Mercayo's side; online payments open Razorpay, which may remember the shopper's UPI or card.
  • Up to 10 saved addresses per shopper.
  • Saved addresses are per store: a shopper's account in one store is separate from their account in another.
  • Phone codes cost a message each, on WhatsApp first and then by SMS, from your notification credits.

Questions

About Quick Checkout for Returning Shoppers

Do shoppers have to create a password?

No. They sign in with a 6-digit code to their phone or email, or with Google. There is no password to forget, and a code lasts 10 minutes.

What does BUY NOW do with the shopper's bag?

It adds the product to the bag they already have and opens checkout, so nothing they chose earlier is lost. They can still remove other lines from the bag before paying.

Can a guest's old orders join their account?

Yes. Orders placed as a guest with the same verified phone number join the account the first time they sign in, so their history, invoices and BUY AGAIN are there at once.

Can shoppers delete their saved addresses?

Yes, in their account's addresses page. They can also delete their whole account; it is deleted after a short wait (7 days to start with), and they can cancel until then.

Does signing in cost me anything?

Google sign-in sends no message. Email and phone codes are messages and are counted like your other messages; a phone code is paid from your notification credits, whether it goes on WhatsApp or by SMS. See the message wallet.

Can I make shoppers sign in before they buy?

No. Guest checkout is always possible, because a forced sign-in loses shoppers. The thank-you page invites guests to sign in afterwards instead, when they are happiest to.
