Gift Options

Send It as a Gift, With a Message and Wrap

Rakhi, Diwali, weddings, birthdays: a lot of what your shoppers buy is for someone else. Gift options let them say so at checkout, write a message, keep the cash amount off the parcel and, if you offer it, ask for gift wrap.

In short

What It Does

In the Gift and Note part of checkout, a shopper can tick This order is a gift. Then:

  • A gift message field opens, with the hint "We print it on the packing slip" and a live count such as "42/300" (300 characters to start with; you choose the limit between 50 and 500). A longer message is pointed out under the field before the order is placed.
  • Hide prices on the packing slip is ticked for them. Packing slips never print item prices; with this ticked, the slip also leaves out the cash to collect on a cash order. (The courier's own label still carries the amount to collect.)
  • If you offer gift wrap, they can tick "Gift wrap for ₹49" (your fee), or "Free gift wrap" when your fee is ₹0 or the goods have reached your free-above amount.

Gift Wrap Is a Real Charge

Gift wrap is priced on the server as a proper charge on the order, like delivery and the COD fee:

WhereWhat Happens
The bill at checkoutA Gift wrap line before the order is placed, and in the total
A cash orderPart of the cash to collect, and counted toward your COD limit
An online orderPart of what is paid now
The GST invoiceTaxed at your rate for delivery and fees (18% to start with)
The orderOne charge among the order's fees

If the bill changes when wrap is ticked, the shopper sees the new total at once; the order is placed only for the total they saw.

What Your Team Sees

Your team sees a Gift card on the order page: the message, "Prices hidden on the packing slip" when that was ticked, and "Gift wrap asked for". The packing slip prints the Gift Message and "Gift: Please Wrap" when wrap was asked for, so whoever packs the parcel knows exactly what to do, even when slips are printed a hundred at a time.

Gift options sit beside the bag's order note, which shoppers can add or change in the same part of checkout. The note is for you ("please call before delivery"); the gift message is for the person receiving the parcel.

For your store

Why It Matters

Gifting is a big part of buying online in India, from Rakhi parcels sent across states to Diwali hampers and wedding presents, and a gift parcel that arrives with "Collect ₹1,299 in cash" on the slip inside is an awkward moment for your shopper. Keeping the amount off the slip and printing their message makes your store the obvious choice for the next gift too.

Gift wrap is a small extra that shoppers gladly pay for, or a reason to spend a little more when it is free above an amount. And because it is a real charge on the order, it is taxed and accounted for properly, with nothing for your team to add by hand and nothing to reconcile at the end of the month.

Because everything is printed for the packer, a gift order needs no WhatsApp back-and-forth about what to write on the card, and the message the shopper typed is the message that goes in the box.

Step by step

How It Works

  1. Keep the Gift Option On

In Settings → Checkout and COD → Gifts at Checkout, Gift option is on to start with. Set the Longest gift message you want to print (300 characters to start with, from 50 to 500), long enough for a few warm lines and short enough for your slip.

  2. Decide on Gift Wrap

Switch on Gift wrap to offer it (it is off to start with: a fee is your choice), set the Gift wrap fee (₹49 to start with, up to ₹1,000; ₹0 makes it free) and, if you like, Free gift wrap above an amount of goods after offers.

  3. Shoppers Mark the Order as a Gift

At checkout, "This order is a gift" opens the message, the hide-prices box (ticked) and gift wrap with its price. The bill shows the wrap as its own line before the order is placed, and on a phone the pinned total follows it.

  4. The Order Arrives With Its Gift Card

The order page shows a Gift card with the message and what the shopper asked for. The order's fees include the wrap, and the GST invoice taxes it at your rate for delivery and fees.

  5. Your Team Packs It as a Gift

PACKING SLIP on the order (or PRINT PACKING SLIPS for many orders at once) prints the message, "Gift: Please Wrap" when wrap was asked for, and leaves out the cash amount when the shopper chose to hide prices. Item prices are never on the slip.

Your shoppers

What Your Shoppers See

A simple "This order is a gift" box at checkout, a message field with a count of the characters left, the cash amount kept off the slip by default, and gift wrap with its price (or "Free gift wrap") shown before they order. The person receiving the parcel finds the message on the slip inside, with no prices and, unless the shopper unticked it, no cash amount.

Mercayo

Mercayo's Controls

Mercayo's team can fix any gift setting for a store or limit the wrap fee, with a reason your admin shows; every change is in Mercayo's audit log, and the effective value is Mercayo's override, then your setting, then the default. Gift wrap is priced by the same server engine as delivery and the COD fee, so the bill, the order and the GST invoice always agree. The message is checked on the server too, so it can never be longer than the limit you set.

Limits today

Good to Know Before You Start

  • One message and one wrap choice per order, not per item.
  • Hiding prices keeps the cash amount off the packing slip; the courier's label on a cash order still shows the amount to collect.
  • Gift wrap is one fee per order, whatever the number of items.
  • The gift message is printed on the packing slip only; there is no separate printed gift card.

Questions

About Gift Options

Is gift wrap taxed?

Yes, at your GST rate for delivery and fees (18% to start with, in Settings → Invoices), whatever the goods in the bag, and it appears on the GST invoice as a charge.

Does gift wrap count toward the COD limit?

Yes. It is part of the cash to collect on a cash order, so it counts toward your COD limit like delivery and the COD fee. A bag just under the limit may need to be paid online once wrap is added.

Where does the gift message appear?

On the order page in your admin and on the packing slip in the parcel. It is not printed on the GST invoice, and the shopper's order note stays separate from it.

Can gift wrap be free for bigger orders only?

Yes. Set "Free gift wrap above" to an amount; when the goods after offers reach it, wrap shows as "Free gift wrap". Below it, the shopper sees your fee.

Does the packing slip show prices on gift orders?

Packing slips never print item prices, gift or not. They print the items with their SKUs, the note, the gift message and, on a cash order, the cash to collect; ticking Hide prices on the packing slip takes that cash line off too.

Can the shopper change their mind about wrap?

Until they press PLACE ORDER, they can untick it and the bill drops the wrap at once. After the order is placed, the wrap is part of the order's charges like delivery.
