Product Insights

How One Product Is Really Doing

A product can look like a best seller and still lose money, or get thousands of views and few orders. Product Insights puts one product's views, orders, returns, cost and margin on one page, for the dates you choose, so you know which products to push, fix or drop.

Kosha is a demo store on Mercayo. Its products, orders and customers are sample data.

In short

What It Does

Open a product in your admin and press INSIGHTS on its sales card. The page shows, for the dates you choose and compared with the period before:

  • Views: how many times the product's page was opened, and how many visitors (a visitor counts once a day).
  • Conversion: orders with this product for every hundred visitors to its page.
  • Net Sales: what it sold for before GST and after discounts, in orders not cancelled or returned undelivered, with the units sold.
  • Gross Profit and margin: net sales less the cost of the units sold, where a cost is given.
  • Return Rate: units asked back in a return for every hundred sold.

Under them, By Day draws units sold and page views over the dates. At a Glance gives the first day it sold, its rating and reviews, returns, the cost of units sold and the margin. Variants lists each size or style with what it sold, its net sales, its margin and what is in stock.

Profit uses the cost of each variant, kept with every order line when the order is made, so a later change of cost never rewrites past margins. Lines sold before a cost was given are priced with the cost given later, and the page says how many units that covers. Costs are taken as excluding GST.

For your store

Why It Matters

Store-wide numbers hide the products that make or lose your month. A case that sells 300 units at a thin margin and comes back often may earn less than one that sells 40. A product with many views and few orders needs better photos, a clearer price or a different offer, not more ads.

For a store that pays for reels and influencers, views against orders per product tell you which products turn attention into sales. For a store with returned parcels and exchanges, the return rate per product shows which listings promise something the product does not deliver.

Step by step

How It Works

  1. Open a Product's Insights

Open Products, choose a product and press INSIGHTS on its sales card. The page opens for your store's usual dates; choose others at the top. It needs the rights to see reports and products.

  2. Read the Numbers

This Product's Numbers shows views and visitors, conversion, net sales and units, gross profit and margin, and the return rate, each against the period before. Tap a number's name for its definition.

  3. Give Variants Their Cost

Without costs, profit and margin show "No cost given" and a link to Add costs. Give each variant its cost in the product editor; from then on every order line keeps the cost it was sold at.

  4. Compare the Variants

Variants lists each size or style with units sold, net sales, margin and stock, so you can see which colour carries the product and which is stuck on the shelf.

Settings You Control

Each one is in your admin. A new store starts with the value shown.

Nothing to set up: it works the same way in every store.

Mercayo

Mercayo's Controls

Product Insights reads the same visit recording and order figures as Analytics, so Mercayo's controls there (such as forcing visit recording off for a store, with a logged reason) apply here too. Costs are your store's own data, read only by people with the rights to see reports and products, and kept apart from every other store by the database.

Limits today

Good to Know Before You Start

  • Views are counted from the day product views began to be recorded; the page says from when.
  • Profit and margin need a cost on each variant; lines sold before a cost was given use the cost given later.
  • Costs are taken as excluding GST.
  • Views come from the store's visit recording; with it off, views and conversion are not shown.

Questions

About Product Insights

Where do the views come from?

From your store's own visit recording: each time the product's page is opened. No cookie is used, and a visitor counts once a day.

Does changing a cost change past margins?

No. Each order line keeps the cost of its variant when the order was made. Only lines sold before any cost was given use a cost given later, and the page tells you how many units that covers.

Is net sales before or after GST?

Before GST and after discounts, counting only orders that were not cancelled or returned undelivered.

Can I see insights for every product at once?

Store-wide product numbers are in Analytics' Products tab and the Sales by Product report; Product Insights is the deep view of one product.
